Nicole Gendreau’s work explores the relationships that shape our identity and define the way we inhabit the world. Her research centres on the body, nature and human bonds, questioning the individual’s relationship with themselves, with their surroundings and with others.
Her practice begins with the body as the first site of recognition: the representation of the female body and the social constructs that have conditioned how it is seen. It then turns to the relationship between people and nature, and to a growing disconnection from the natural world that alters how we experience body and environment. Her most recent work addresses our need for one another, and how identity is transformed through bonds and shared experience.
Working in sculpture and painting, Gendreau develops a visual language where geometry, line, volume and material converge. She works in marble, cantera stone, bronze, ceramics and glass mosaic, attentive to the expressive range of each material and its relationship to space and the body.
The result is a reflection on individuality, belonging and the many forms of connection that make us human.
